Green growth in the post-COVID - review of the framework conditions for the transition to a green economy

The second round table meeting: Green growth in the post-COVID-review of the framework conditions for the transition to a green economy was held as part of a series consisting of eleven strategic dialogues "Green growth and climate change in the Republic of Uzbekistan, as well as consultations with stakeholders, which will continue until the end of December 2021 in order to accelerate Uzbekistan's transition to a "green"economy.

A series of round tables are held jointly with the Ministry of Economic Development and Poverty Reduction of the Republic of Uzbekistan (MERS RUz), the World Bank and the Regional Environmental Center for Central Asia (CAREC).

The event was attended by representatives of state bodies, leading experts on economic development and environmental protection, as well as representatives of the civil society and international organizations to discuss the framework conditions for Uzbekistan's transition to a green economy in the post-covid period.

The participants of the meeting discussed the stages of transition to a green economy in Uzbekistan, taking into account international experience, priorities and features of the country's development.

Head of the Department of the Ministry of Economic Development and Poverty Reduction of the Republic of Uzbekistan Utkirjon Kholbadalov stressed that Uzbekistan intends to transition to a green economy will be one of the conditions for economic growth. He noted that the planned economic reforms will be implemented in combination with the transition to a green economy. This growth model ensures the sustainable and efficient use of natural and energy resources, minimizing pollution, climate and environmental impacts, increasing resilience to natural disasters and climate change, and preserving biodiversity.

Stefan Hallegat, a leading economist at the World Bank's Climate Change group, noted that it is necessary to consider the process of transition to a green economy in conjunction with all other development goals.

The head of the Statistical Analysis Department of the Ministry of Agriculture of the Republic of Uzbekistan Nodirzhan Sadriddinov introduced the plans of Uzbekistan within the framework of green growth. According to him, by 2030, the Republic of Uzbekistan is expected to widely use ecological modes of transport, achieve a neutral balance of land degradation, increase the efficiency of water use in all sectors of the economy, increase the average productivity of agricultural products to 20-25%.

Representatives of international organizations informed the participants about the initiatives of international partners to support Uzbekistan in the transition to green development.

The next 9 strategic dialogues in the round table format, organized jointly by the Ministry of Economic Development and Poverty Reduction of the Republic of Uzbekistan, the World Bank and CAREC, will be held twice a month until the end of December 2021. Round tables are expected to be held on the topics of supporting green, low-carbon development of industry and the economy; increasing resilience to climate change; mobilizing green finance; as well as developing a roadmap to accelerate the transition to green growth and climate change resilience, etc.

This series of round tables will bring together stakeholders who will discuss ways to accelerate Uzbekistan's progress in achieving the environmental sustainability priorities identified in the draft Strategy on Climate Change 2021-23, as well as the Government's Strategy for the transition to a "green" economy.
