On December 7 and 9 this year, seminars on decarbonization and industrial symbiosis were held in the building of the Ministry of Economic Development and Poverty Reduction of the Republic of Uzbekistan with the participation of Ministries, Associations, departments and organizations.
The event was organized by the World Bank Project "Improving the Energy Efficiency of Industrial Enterprises" together with a Consortium of local and international consultants.

The consortium of LDK consultants "Consultants Engineers and Planners SA" (Greece); "Juru Energy Limited" (Great Britain); "International Synergies Ltd" (Great Britain); "Unicase Law Firm" (Uzbekistan), hired by the World Bank, assists the Government of Uzbekistan in developing innovative technological solutions for decarbonization and industrial symbiosis.
Currently, the Consortium team is conducting a comprehensive assessment of the industrial sector of Uzbekistan and its decarbonization potential through the use of innovative technological solutions and measures, including DSM, RES, energy efficiency, smart grids, digital technologies, centralized energy management system (FEMS), carbon capture, utilization and storage (CCUS), biomass/hydrogen as raw materials/fuel, as well as Industry 4.0 tools for monitoring and optimizing energy use.

The consultants familiarized the seminar participants with an overview of the Project objectives, providing a preliminary assessment of the industrial sector of Uzbekistan and subsequent decarbonization options.
The consultants visited more than 20 industrial enterprises in the small industrial zone of the Yakkasarai district. And also visited large industrial enterprises such as "UzAuto Motors Powertrain", JSC "Maxam-Chirchiq", LLC "Angren Shakar" and JSC "Bekabad cement". In addition, the consultants had the opportunity to communicate with the management of the State Unitary Enterprise PU"Makhsustrans" and Water Treatment plants "Salar".
Based on the material studied, the consultants were able to provide updated information – decarbonization and industrial symbiosis measures taken in Uzbekistan so far. In addition, the consultants gave preliminary recommendations and opinions on possible progress on the decarbonization component and industrial symbiosis.
At the end of the work done to assess the industrial symbiosis of representative economic zones and ways to decarbonize them into eco-industrial parks (EIP), the consultants will present the results of the analysis. Subsequently, these data will be used to develop a Roadmap for decarbonization of the industrial sector in Uzbekistan, which the Consortium plans to present in early 2022.
